Stress –

We cannot avoid life’s challenges but we can learn to manage them more effectively, to ensure that our mental, emotional and physical wellbeing are not compromised.

It is important to recognise that not all stressors are negative. A positive stressor provides 5 key benefits:

  • Motivates us to perform at a higher level
  • Inspires us to be more creative
  • Prompts us to discover new solutions to challenges
  • Provides stimulus for growth and change
  • Teaches us resilience

Stressors impact us negatively however when:

  • They continue for a prolonged period of time
  • The stressful situation re-occurs
  • The stressful situation is not resolvable
  • Multiple stressors occur simultaneously
  • The individual lacks resilience or prior experience

It is under these circumstances that it can then be helpful to seek professional assistance, and engage in activities such as meditation to alleviate anxiety and promote wellbeing.

Meditation –

Meditation is simply a state of deep relaxation providing opportunity for reflection, rest and rejuvenation.  It can be a spiritual or religious experience but for many it is simply a tool to enhance their mental, emotional and physical wellbeing.   Scientific research has measured significant physiological and psychological benefits from regular meditation practice.

There are many forms of meditation and the key is finding one which works for you.  Even a slow, quiet, contemplative walk through nature can have beneficial and healing effects.  Other forms of meditation include sitting quietly listening to soft music or a guided meditation story where you co-create the images and experiences in your imagination.

The Process –

The key to Meditation is to remove yourself from all distractions, noise and stimulation thereby creating a comfortable quiet space in which you can more readily relax and enjoy the experience.   To quieten and still your mind and relax your body you turn your focus to your breath, observing the in and out breath as your body naturally and automatically breathes for you.  In our busy-paced modern lives we rarely take time to slow down and stop.  This can therefore feel a little foreign and difficult at first.  Your meditation teacher will guide you gently through the process, providing tips and tools to assist you.

Who can benefit from Meditation?

Everyone benefits from regular meditation practice.  Some of the benefits you can experience are:

  • Improved airflow to the lungs, assisting with asthma symptoms
  • Lowered levels of harmful chemicals in your body associated with stress
  • Drop in cholesterol levels
  • Decrease in high blood pressure
  • Decreased feelings of depression and anxiety
  • Increased feelings of vitality and rejuvenation
  • Feeling more emotional stability
  • Improved learning ability and memory
  • Improved focus and concentration
  • Greater creativity
  • Increased happiness
  • Greater clarity and understanding of life events and situations
